CHURCH CHOIR
Mr.
H. A. Bekoe founded the Choir in October 1935 with some children,
young men and women including his own daughters Paulina and
Patricia Bekoe.
But
he met with great opposition from the Session of the local
church; therefore the group could never put on the robes that
the founder purchased. At best, the Session was prepared to
allow the group to sing and act as an ordinary singing group
but not to put on robes. Under the circumstances the interest
of the group began to fall off and in October 1936, the group
was dissolved. Early 1938 however, the group was reorganized
through the encouragements of the new Pastor in charge, Rev.
P. G. Djeoleto who ruled that the local church should have
a robed choir and that it should prepare for the dedication
of the new chapel, which had been scheduled for 1938. Members
of the dissolved choir happily came together under the old
executive and the choir was formally inaugurated.
The
choir continues to grow and its membership has increased greatly
from twenty-three (23) to seventy (70). The activities and
services it renders to the congregation and the community
has also increased (Bible reading, visiting the sick, staging
plays, cleaning the chapel, etc.). The Choir effectively leads
the Church in singing praises to God through the singing of
hymns and sacred songs. This greatly helped to enrich the
Church worship and improved the spiritual standard of worshippers.
The
Choir has played very unique and important roles in the formation
of branch choirs (e.g. Awukugua choir) and Choir Unions in
the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. It was very instrumental
in the formation of Akuapem-New Juaben Presbyterian Church
Choirs’ Union in 1952 at Akropong.
The
Choir was one of the few choirs which mooted the idea of a
national union and hosted the first general meeting of the
then existing Presbytery Unions – Akuapem/New Juaben,
Akim Abuakwa, Kwahu and Ga/Dangme in 1957. it was therefore
at the Akropong meeting that the idea of a National Union
was accepted and interim officers elected.
The
Choir has played host to a number of conferences, meetings
and activities organized by the sub-union (Ridge Union), the
Presbytery Union and the National Union- notable among them
being the 1960 and 1982 National Conferences. The Choir hosted
the separation of the Akuapem/Volta Presbyterian Church Choir’s
Union into two separate Unions i.e. Akuapem Union and Volta
Union on 6th March 1994.
The
Akropong Presbyterian Church Choir has been privileged to
be featured on national radio and T.V. programmes. In 1973,
the Choir’s record entitled “Mons?re” became
a household song. As a proof of the local Choir’s interest
in Bible Study, it won the first Bible Quiz competition organized
by Akuapem Volta Presbyterian Church Choirs’ Union.
Michael B. Adu Asare who led the Bible Quiz team also won
the Individual Prize for the competition.
The
Choir is grateful to all those who helped in diverse ways
to uplift the name of the Choir. The founding of the Choir
has not been rosy at all; there have lots of up and downs,
yet through God’s guidance and protection, the Choir
is still moving along happily like a city set on a hill to
give light and inspiration to younger ones and to help form
new ones in the Union. Now we praise and thank God for all
that He has done for Akropong Presbyterian Church Choir and
pray that His presence will go with the CHOIR throughout the
years ahead to sing praises to His most Holy Name.
