BRIEF HISTORY OF AKROPONG YOUNG PEOPLES GUILD
Mr.
Atkinson, a Scottish Missionary of the Presbyterian Church
Headquarters, Accra, founded this organization in March 1939.
it was the third guild to be founded by Mr. Atkinson in Ghana.
The founding members were; Messrs Late Okraku Aye (First Secretary),
Rev. G. K. Ampofo, former tutor of P. T. C. and the Late Synod
Clerk, Evangelical Presbyterian Church (First President).
Messrs. E. B. Mullings, F. G. Osae, Ofori Addo-Senior, Addo
Bampo and E. D. Offei.
The
activities of the Guild, from its inspection consisted of
Bible Study, Bible Quiz, Singing of Hymns and Anthems at Church
Services, Visitations, Social gatherings and entertainments.
It also conducted children services and sang songs at church
services. The Guild went on excursions to several places,
e.g. Larteh, Mamfe, Koforidua and Akosombo, as well as Asamankese
to sell the Guild and for enjoyment.
In
the early 1940s, the Guildenrolled some youthful and dynamic
members of the Presbyterian Training College Staff. They included
Messrs. Fred Agyeman, C. A. Ansah, J. K. Yebo and Nketia (Proffessor)
who taught the Y. P. G. anthems and the late Mr. N. Amankwaa
Saforo of the Akropong U. A. C.
In
1960 Mr. L. D. Apraku, a member of the Y. W. C. A. of Ghana,
was reposted to the Presbyterian Training College from the
University of Ghana, Legon, Mr. Ofosu Darko was the Music
Director, and the late Mr. Osae Kwabi, the Organizer, while
Madam Mary Badu and Mrs. Martha Offei-Addo offered members
of the Guild example of hardwork and steadfastness. Mr. And
now Rev. Offei Addo became the National Organizer and President
of Southern Ghana Y. P. G. and finally, the National President
to succeed Rev. O. D. Darko.
In
1966, Rev. F. W. K. Akuffo entrusted to Y. P. G. the responsibility
of forming a Youth Council which comprised representatives
of all organizations in the church. This council helped controland
guide activities the Pastor and the elders of the church entrusted
to the youth. Rev. S. D> Tettey was appointed Youth Pastor
of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and made resident at Akropong.
In 1973 it won the Bible Quiz contest of the Southern Ghana
Annual Conference held at Akosombo.
The
following have contributed immensely to the growth of the
Guild. They are Mr. L. D. Apraku – President, Mrs. Gladys
Bampo Parry – Vice President, Miss Jane O)fosuapea –
Treasurer and Mr. B. O. Darkop – Secretary.
ACTIVITIES

2. Learning and singing of anthems and Hymns at church services
and at social gatherings
3. Visitations
4. Organization of children services
5. organization of games and serving ministers and presbyters
whenever the need arises.
On
health and sanitation, the Guild saw it that the cemetery,
the chapel premises and other places are kept tidy all the
year round. When the walls of the cemetery got broken the
Youth Guild asked the permission from the Session and constructed
a fence around it. The church however replaced the fence with
a permanent wall.
Excursions
and Evangelism
This activity urged the youth to work hard and saved some
money to be able to explore and exchange ideas with youth
outside their community. The Guild went to the following places:
Abonse, Aseseeso, Apirede, Larteh, Mamfe,Aburi, Nsawam, Suhum,
Koforidua, Kaneshie and Asamankese for entertainment and other
activies.
